What works, what to weigh

Strengths

4 reasons to book
  • Central location — Guests repeatedly highlight the proximity to the Imperial Palace, the short walk to two subway stations on the Karasuma line, and the 25-minute walk to Nijo Castle.
  • Excellent staff — Staff are consistently praised for their helpfulness and English proficiency, both at the front desk and in the restaurant.
  • Breakfast with a view — The breakfast is described as very good, well priced, and served with a garden view, offering both Japanese and American options.
  • Practical amenities — Rooms come with an electric kettle, refrigerator, in-room safe, and free internet. On-site parking is available, which is not always the case in Kyoto.

Worth weighing

4 to weigh
  • Rooms can get stuffy — Some guests found rooms too warm and stuffy during winter because the building's heating was on and the window didn't open, limiting adjustment.
  • Facilities score is low — The facilities category has the lowest rating (6.6), suggesting the hotel's physical amenities lag behind other aspects.
  • Value for money questioned — One guest noted the hotel was 'a bit pricey' despite being clean, suggesting some may find rates high for the class.
  • No pets allowed — The hotel does not permit pets.

“The room had space under the bed for luggage, which was handy.”

8Verified guest

“My queen room came with powerful air conditioning and a view over Kyoto's gardens. It was well laid out and a good size, and the location near the railways was absolutely perfect.”

8Verified guest

“The room was well organised with a private bathroom, an electric kettle, and a refrigerator. The bed was comfortable and the internet was fast. The hotel sat centrally between two subway stations on the Karasuma line, and there were plenty of restaurants nearby, like Panda Yori Nodoka, just a 5-minute walk away.”

8Verified guest

“We really enjoyed this fairly nice stay during our holiday. Breakfast was very good with a view of a garden and well priced. The room was reasonably spacious and overlooked the Imperial Garden entrance, so we ended up staying in all day.”

8Verified guest

“The breakfast choices were great.”

“Service in Japan is always good, but the staff here went a level above. The front desk spoke excellent English, as did the maitre d' at the restaurants. The property offers many services (hairdresser, church, banquet, etc.) and sits right in front of the Imperial Palace, a 30-minute walk from Ryoanji's stone garden. We strongly recommend this place.”
